The conflict is really dealing with religion. The lose of Jay helped Mary get back into her catholic beliefs. Which causes the family to fight.
The family doesn’t just fight over the main reason of religion but other things. Jay’s death brings out the worst in the family. A couple of the things that the family fights over are money, the house, belongings, custody,and many other things.
